Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Canada — Current Status

Canada's Parents and Grandparents Program is currently paused for new intake. IRCC is not accepting new interest-to-sponsor forms or issuing new invitations until further notice, while existing applications continue to be processed. Argus can help with existing PGP files and assess the Super Visa as an alternative.

Current status

Is the Parents and Grandparents Program open?

No. IRCC has paused new intake under the PGP. It is not accepting new interest-to-sponsor forms or issuing new invitations until further notice. Existing applications continue to be processed.

Overview

What is the Parents and Grandparents Program?

The PGP can allow eligible Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor qualifying parents or grandparents for permanent residence. The program has historically used an invitation system because interest exceeds available spaces.

Existing cases

Who can sponsor under PGP?

For an invited or existing case, the sponsor must meet the applicable status, age, residence, financial and sponsorship requirements. PGP has a specific income test using the relevant tax years and family-size calculation.

Application process

How existing PGP applications work

  1. Interest-to-sponsor and invitation stage; new intake is currently paused.
  2. Invited sponsor submits sponsorship and PR applications.
  3. IRCC assesses sponsor eligibility and the parent/grandparent PR application.
  4. Medical, police, biometrics or additional documents may be requested.
Alternative option

Super Visa as an alternative to PGP

The Super Visa is a temporary residence option for eligible parents and grandparents. It can allow stays of up to 5 years at a time, subject to host-income, insurance, medical and visitor requirements. It is not permanent residence.

  • trying to submit a new application while intake is paused;
  • not meeting the required sponsor income;
