The Post-Graduation Work Permit Program

Canada offers a wide variety of work opportunities, ideal work conditions and desirable remuneration. Students who graduate from designated Canadian (DLIs) post-secondary institute (with exception of few programs like ESL/FSL) are eligible to apply for Post-Graduation Work Permit.

If you are aiming to apply for a post-graduation work permit you must currently hold valid temporary status or have left Canada. Graduating from a designated learning institution (DLI) is a prerequisite and you should meet the following criteria to apply:

  • You must have completed an academic, vocational or professional training program in Canada at an eligible institution the duration of which is minimum 8 months. The program should earn you a degree, diploma or certificate
  • Maintaining full time student status in all academic session of the program is mandatory. Exceptions can be made with valid reason for ‘leave from studies’ and ‘final academic session’. You should also be looking at completing and submitting your post-graduation work permit application at the final phase of your program.
  • You should receive a confirmation and an official letter from the designated learning institution (DLI) confirming that you have successfully completed the program.
  • If less than 50% of your program is through distance learning courses, then you are eligible for PGWP
  •
  • Length of WP generally is same as the length of your program. 2 years or longer program may get 3 years work permit
  • Distance learning program completed outside Canada will be excluded for length of WP
  • Must apply within 180 days after you get the letter of completion from your institute
  • If your study permit expires before you get your completion letter you can either apply for visitor record or apply PGWP from outside Canada
  • PGWP will be issued till the validity of your passport. IRCC will notify you if you are eligible for an extension

If you are student who completed your study period and have already applied for the PGWP you can work following the required criteria:

  • You were a full-time student enrolled at a DLI in a post-secondary academic, vocational or professional training program
  • You were authorized to work off-campus without a work permit
  • You work under the designated work hours allowed to you

Work experience gained through PGWP skill type 0 or skill level A or B under the National Occupational Classification (NOC) can help graduates qualify for permanent residence in Canada through the Canadian experience class within Express Entry programs.
