Work Permit

Living and working in Canada is a dream for many as the country is known for its superior living and working conditions. If you are foreign national looking to stay and work in Canada, you will require a valid work permit.You are not allowed to work in Canada without a valid work permit.

There are two types of work permit in Canada issued to individuals aspiring to work.

That is Employer-specific work permit and Open work permit

Employer-specific work permit in Canada

If you have already managed to get a job with a Canadian employer or being transferred from your existing job location to Canada you are eligible for an employer-specific work permit. This permit legally enables you to work in Canada according to the conditions on your work permit that includes

  • The name and of the specific employer who have offered to employ you
  • The duration or tenure of your work should be defined
  • The location of your job (if applicable)
  • Additionally the employer must present an ESDC (Employment and Social Development Canada) an LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment), which gives them permission to hire foreign skilled workers for a post that cannot be filled in by citizens or permanent residents of Canada.

Open work permit in Canada

In some special cases foreign applicants or resident students are granted open work permit. Here are some of the conditions under which you can expect to obtain an open work permit:

  • If you are an international student who graduated from a designated learning institution you are eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program which is an open work permit
  • You have applied for permanent residency in some specific cases
  • You are the spouse or common-law partner of a skilled worker or international student
  • You are a refugee or protected person under law or a member of such a family
  • You are under an unenforceable removal order
  • If you are being abused or at risk of being abused at your existing work with Employer-specific work permit

Work permit will not be issued if:

  • There are reasonable grounds to believe that the applicant can’t do the work.
  • The applicant intends to work in Quebec but does not hold CAQ.
  • The applicant is engaged in unauthorized work/study.
  • The employer does not have the required authorization to hire foreign nationals.

To apply for a work permit you will be charged CAD 155 (including extensions). For groups of performing artist or staffs the work permit is CAD100 per individual.
